Director of Special Education - DIISD
The Director of Special Education position will begin on July 1, 2025. This is a full year, full-time, exempt position that offers competitive wages and full benefits. Office is located at the DIISD Administration Building in Kingsford, Michigan, and serves Dickinson and Iron Counties. The deadline for initial consideration is Friday, March 14, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. CST.

Length of Contract: Full Time, Full Year
Employment Status: Non-Union, Exempt
Qualifications:
- Masters Degree
- Full approval in at least one area of Special Education
- Three years of successful professional practice or administrative experience in Special Education or combination thereof
- Fulfill State of Michigan Special Education Rules for Director
- Full or temporary approval as Director of Special Education
- Driving may be necessary for this position which would require a valid driver’s license.
General Description:
Provides oversight and leadership to the Special Education Department in the areas of program organization, staff development, service delivery, evaluation, budget and finance. The Director insures that the DIISD and it’s constituent districts are in compliance with Federal and State of Michigan Special Education Rules. The Director provides regulatory oversight in processing and reviewing special education data, documentation and reports to the Department of Education.
Essential Functions:
- Establish and maintain a system to ensure appropriate supervision and evaluation of assigned staff and programs.

Provide leadership in the development of special education programs and services in the LEA’s and Intermediate School District.

Maintain a working relationship with parent groups involved in special education programs and services.
- Establish and maintain an efficient and effective office management system.

Develop and maintain procedures for budget preparation, management financial accountability and reporting.

Represent the Dickinson-Iron Intermediate School District at State regional and local special education meetings.

Provide general consultation to teachers and administrators form LEA’s regarding special education.

Cooperates with public and private agencies, organizations, and professional in securing and providing services for impaired students.

Provide and disseminate information to LEA’s related to State Department directives, codes, guidelines, and current trends.

Promote community understanding, support and involvement with special education programs and services.

Provide liaison services between the SE Department and LEA’s, post-secondary institutions, and other collaborating agencies.

Must have regular and reliable attendance.

All other duties as assigned.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serve as a positive role model for DIISD constituents’ demonstration how to be a responsible citizen and productive member of society.
- Adhere to DIISD Code of Ethics.
- Ability to carry out other associated duties as assigned by administration
Additional Working Conditions:
- Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluid and tissue.
- With reimbursement, may be required to use personal vehicle to perform job related functions.
